Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland

Registration now open for Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland

Registration is now open and initial route details are available for the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland.  This major cycling legacy event follows the huge success of the Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza which was held here in May 2014.

The first Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland will be held on 21 June 2015, organised by Shadetree Sports and supported by Tourism NI.  Gran Fondo events are closed-road sportives aimed at amateur cyclists around the world who travel to the host country to participate.

Events take place throughout Europe and the rest of the world but are limited in number in an effort to keep them unique.

1987 Giro d’Italia champion Stephen Roche will be an event ambassador and will ride the route, giving local cyclists an opportunity to ride alongside him.  More famous cycling champions taking part will be announced in the run-up to the event.

The Mourne Route, a 177 Km ride, will challenge the fittest riders by providing tough climbs and inspire each rider by bringing them through some breathtaking scenery.  The Strangford Route, a 58 Km loop touching the shores of Strangford Lough, is achievable for beginner and novice cyclists.  Both routes start and finish in Belfast, at the iconic Titanic Belfast building.
